How TB12 Sports built authority in one of e-commerce SEO's most competitive categories.

In a supplements and sports-nutrition market dominated by high-authority competitors, TB12 Sports needed more than routine on-page SEO. MAXPlaces supported an authority-first program that increased referring domains by more than 25%, lifted projected organic traffic 32%, and helped tracked long-tail keywords jump 7 to 9 pages following a Google Core Update.

The Client

A trusted brand, ready for AI-era search.

TB12 Sports is a celebrity-founded sports nutrition and wellness e-commerce brand associated with an internationally recognized NFL player. The brand competes across saturated supplements, protein powder, and online fitness-shopping searches where organic growth depends on category-page strength, off-page authority, and a long-tail ranking strategy capable of laddering toward highly competitive head terms.

The Challenge

Brand recognition was not enough to win an authority-gated SEO niche.

Supplements and protein powder searches are among the most competitive e-commerce SEO categories. Head terms are crowded with entrenched, high-authority competitors, and Google volatility can make short-term movement difficult to interpret. TB12 Sports needed a strategy that built authority quickly, created movement in long-tail search, and stayed disciplined through algorithm updates.

!
A saturated category. Sports nutrition, supplements, and protein powder searches are heavily contested by national brands, publishers, retailers, and marketplaces.
!
Authority barriers. Category and collection pages needed stronger off-page support before they could compete for valuable organic rankings.
!
Algorithm volatility. Core and review-system updates created ranking swings across the fitness and online-shopping space, requiring careful interpretation rather than reactive changes.
The Approach

We put the S.T.A.R. framework to work.

MAXPlaces supported an authority-first program designed to grow referring domains, reinforce category pages, and use long-tail keyword gains as the path toward more competitive head terms.

S

Strategic Planning

Prioritized long-tail sports nutrition and protein-powder variations as the first ranking ladder, with head terms treated as the long-term authority target.

T

Technical SEO Support

Used technical and category-page SEO work to make key commerce pages stronger targets for authority-building and keyword movement.

A

Tiered Authority Building

Built tier-1 links toward priority collection and category pages, supported by large tier-2 and tier-3 link layers to accelerate discovery and strengthen off-page signals.

R
Results Measurement Reported monthly through AHREFS, SEMrush, and hosted keyword-rank tracking, separating durable authority gains from short-term algorithm-update volatility.
The Results

Authority grew, long-tail rankings moved, and the strategy held through volatility.

The strongest signal was authority growth. Referring domains increased by more than 25% during the documented reporting window, while projected organic traffic rose 32%. After the late-summer Google Core Update, tracked long-tail keywords made 7-, 8-, and 9-page jumps, moving into pages 1, 2, and 3. During the November Core and Reviews updates, MAXPlaces continued to frame the data honestly: short-term volatility was real, but authority growth and tracked ranking movement showed the foundation was still strengthening.

Tracked long-tail keywords jumped 7-9 pages after the late-summer Google Core Update, landing representative terms on pages 1, 2, and 3.
Tiered authority architecture scaled with tier-1 links reinforced by large tier-2 and tier-3 link layers.
Strategy held through Google volatility while the November Broad Core Update and Reviews Update created 9/10 volatility across fitness and online-shopping results.
Long-tail wins built the ladder positioning the site to compete over time for harder head terms such as protein powder.
The lesson from TB12 Sports is that authority-first SEO still matters in the hardest e-commerce categories. The work was not about chasing one ranking spike; it was about building enough off-page strength for long-tail wins to start pulling the brand toward more competitive search territory.
